  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 small red pepper, chopped
  • 1 Tbls. red wne vinegar
  • 1 Tbls. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 c. tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbls. tomato paste
  • pinch of red pepper flakes, optional

Substitute for Homemade Montreal Seasoning

  • 1 Tbls. paprika
  • 1 Tbls. crushed black pepper
  • 1 Tbls. kosher salt
  • 1-1/2 t. granulated garlic
  • 1-1/2 t. granulated onion
  • 1-1/2 t. crushed coriander
  • 1-1/2 t. dill
  • 1-1/2 t. crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up.

Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and continue to cook meat, breaking up periodically.

When the meat is almost browned, add onion and red pepper to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender and meat is thoroughly cooked.

Add tomato sauce and tomato paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer until bubbly and hot.

Serve on toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.

NOTE: Serves 4. If using ground chuck, don't add seasoning mix when browning meat. Brown meat first, drain fat, then add seasoning mixture.
