Pepperoni Bread

Our sons Ryan & Ben's favorite!
Serve dipped in pizza sauce, if desired

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. Hormel Pepperoni slices (or turkey pepperoni, with 1/2 t. red pepper flakes added)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • oregano to taste
  • 1-1/2 – 2 c. mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 loaf frozen white or Italian bread dough (Rhodes), at room temperature.
  • small can of pizza sauce (we use Pastoreli), optional

Instructions

Thaw bread dough in refrigerator overnight. When ready to assemble, take out of refrigerator and let stand to room temperature (at least 30 minutes). If dough is cold it will be hard to work with.

  1. Roll out into a large oblong shape (roughly 12 x 14") and brush on some of the beaten egg.
  2. Sprinkle oregano generously over entire surface.
  3. Cover with pepperoni slices and cheese.

Roll up jellyroll fashion. Pinch ends together and secure with toothpicks. Also secure seam with toothpicks. Cover lightly with a flour sack towel and let it rise for about 30 minutes. Brush remaining egg over top of bread dough.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Remove toothpicks. Slice in 1-1/2 inch slices to serve.

Serve with pizza sauce if desired

NOTE: This can be made a couple hours ahead of time. Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate. Let stand at room temp for about 20-30 minutes before baking.
