French Toast: Baked Apple French Toast

Make the night before

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of sour dough or French bread, sliced 3/4" thick
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1-1/2 c. milk
  • 1-1/2 t. vanilla
  • 1-1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. melted butter
  • 3 Tbls. light corn syrup
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts, optional
  • 2-3 lg. tart apples, peeled & sliced 1/4" thick

Instructions

In a saucepan, cook brown sugar, butter and syrup until thick (about 5-7 minutes). Stir in chopped walnuts, if using. Pour into an ungreased 15x10x2-inch baking pan. Arrange apple slices on top.

In a bowl, mix the eggs, milk and vanilla.

Dip bread slices into egg mixture and let soak for 1 minute.

Place bread slices on top of apples. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, remove from refrigerator; let stand for 30 minutes before baking.

Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.

NOTE: Serve warm with syrup (may not even need syrup because it makes its own)
