Ingredients
- 1/3 c. shortening (Crisco butter flavored baking sticks)
- 1/3 c. butter, softened
- 1-1/2 c. packed brown sugar
- 3 t. vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 1 Tbls. water
- 3/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour (or 1/2 cup)
- 3/4 c. unbleached white flour (or 1 cup)
- 1/3 c. baking cocoa
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1/4 t. baking soda
- 12 oz. pkg. dark chocolate chips
- 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
Instructions
In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, cream the shortening, butter, sugar, water and vanilla until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs.
Combine the flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda. Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and stir by hand with a wooden spoon to blend. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
Chill dough for several hours before baking.
Drop dough by rounded teaspoons, 2 inches apart, onto lightly greased cookies sheets.
Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes; do not over bake. Cool cookies on wire racks lined with paper towel to absorb the grease.
